Powerset Co-Founder to Launch Crowdsourced Green VC Fund

Yet another high-flying Silicon Valley entrepreneur is planning to capitalize on the growing popularity of "green" technology, and to do it, he's tapping the wisdom of crowds as well as their cash.

Steve Newcomb, a co-founder of search startup Powerset, is in the early stages of launching a ventur- capital fund that would accept green investments as low as $100, with a maximum investment of $1,000.

"It would be a breakthrough green venture-capital fund for the people, by the people. As excited as I was about PowerSet, I'm 10 times more excited about this," Newcomb told Wired.com. "Worldwide, there is the potential to raise a multibillion-dollar fund."

Newcomb joins a high-profile list of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists who see energy as the big investment opportunity of the next century, including Silicon Valley heavyweights Vinod Khosla and John Doerr.

Mona Shores to replace 600 computers

MONA SHORES — More new technology is on tap for the students of Mona Shores Public Schools.

The district plans to replace 600 desktop computers in labs districtwide this summer, completing improvements funded with a 0.65-mill, $4.2 million bond issue approved by voters in 2005.

The district has spent $3.8 million in technology upgrades and new buses so far, and will spend another $400,000 on the computers this summer.

The millage proceeds have paid for improvements to security (such as surveillance cameras, motion detection and doors), six new buses and new technology such as a phone system, desktop and laptop computers, digital video equipment and digital cameras.

The district has invested heavily in technology through the past decade because officials said they believe it's an essential part of quality instruction for students.

Close call at Steamboat airport

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs airport officials say a United Express flight aborted a landing attempt on Saturday after the pilots spotted a small plane on their runway.

Yampa Valley Regional Airport Manager Dave Ruppel says traffic controllers in Denver had cleared the small plane for takeoff after the United Express pilots apparently reported they were already on the ground before they had actually landed.

No injuries were reported. United officials did not immediately return a call.

It's not clear how many people were on the United Express CRJ-700, which can carry 66 passengers, or the smaller King Air, which can carry nine or 12.

Federal officials said Monday they had no report of the incident.
