| MOVIE REVIEW: 'Vantage Point' is diverting but ludicrous
The assassination of an American president is examined from multiple angles in "Vantage Point," a fast-paced thriller whose gimmicky narrative helps disguise the foolishness at its center. Still, audiences looking for rapid-fire thrills could do worse than this star-heavy debut from first-time feature director Pete Travis and first-time screenwriter Barry Levy. President Ashton (William Hurt) is attending an anti-terrorist summit in Spain when he's gunned down by a hidden sniper. Minutes later the platform from which he was to have addressed a vast throng explodes. "Vantage Point" examines the same 12 minutes of chaos from eight different points of view. By fracturing the narrative, breaking it down into a jigsaw puzzle, the filmmakers hope to deliver an added dimension of suspense.

Between the Lines Latest Post | Last 10 Posts | Archives Supercomputing and the art of the sales pitch Posted in: General IT Management Hardware Infrastructure Datacenter Sun Innovation Supercomputers are wonderful things. Meaningful research gets done and geeks everywhere can drool over the specs like car buffs fawning over a vintage Corvette. But there's also a subtle sales pitch, which explains why most large tech vendors play like IBM and HP play in the high-performance computing space. The pitch was evident in Sun CEO's Jonathan's Schwartz's blog post on the National Science Foundation's supercomputing cloud naturally powered by Sun. First, Schwartz delivers the eye candy (and there's a lot of it). Among the key stats: 6,000 square feet datacenter space consuming less than 3 Megawatts… More than 4000 quad core Sun/Opteron blades, 120+ Tb of DRAM, running CentOS More than 500 teraflops computing capacity Jobs scheduled by Sun's Grid Engine Interconnected by two, 100 terabit non-blocking Magnum switches Data managed by the Lustre file system, on Thumpers More than 2 petabytes of storage Pretty neat eh? But it's hard to miss the sales pitch.
History Channel and Crime Network for Top UP TV
This will enable it to free space for a further HD channel. It will issue a call before the end of the year for a current SD pay channel to be converted to HD clearly intended for Canal+. Finally, the CSA is to issue another call early in 2008 for three more HDTV channels using frequencies available in several large towns. Back to top Ofcom DTT proposals UK Media regulator Ofcom has revealed proposals for a significant upgrade of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) that will offer more channels and new services. The proposed upgrade will create capacity allowing high definition television channels on DTT on which Freeview operates as early as 2009. It says the proposals would deliver significant benefits for: viewers, who would be able to access an array of new channels; broadcasters, who would be able to deliver a greater range of services and also the economy, by making better use of the valuable spectrum reserved for broadcasting.
Ticket Tweaking How do Hollywood box-office estimates work?
This "missing factor" affords studios some wiggle room to secure a box-office record, or to say that the sequel beat the opening of the original. Generally such tweaking remains a Hollywood secret, though; executives tempted to complain know too well that one day they may want to do the same thing. As was the case with Revenge of the Sith, studios' weekend estimates are typically closely aligned with actuals released on Monday. But there have been situations where weekend projections are wildly off course. Maybe a bad storm hurt business on Sunday night. Or the studio underestimated the millions watching a big World Series game or the Oscars. In 2004, for example, Christmas Eve, typically a low-grossing day at theaters, fell on a Friday, which is ordinarily a high-grossing day.

Resistance 2 will feature a 60 player online mode, which I can imagine will be insane. If Resistance 2 expands on the same gameplay and amazing storyline the first Resistance left off on, Resistance 2 will no doubt be one of the best games of the year. Gears of War 2 - It's already time for a sequel of this game? I'm still replaying the first one!!! Gears of War was easily one of the most spectacular games ever created, and Gears 2 promises to deliver even more punch. Cliffy B (he gets on my nerves, but he made a heck of a game) has said that Gears 2 will have much more storyline than the first one did, and that's about the only thing the first game lacked. If we see an even more ridiculous gun than the Chainsaw Lancer in the first game, I wouldnt be surprized. Only thing I'm concerned about with this game is how hard my jaw will hit the floor when I play it.

Big Sky Pull Out Sparks Scramble
The airport at Lake Clear serves Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and Tupper Lake. Big Sky claims bad weather and too few passengers are causing it to pull out of the airport by January 7. Local airports across northern New York are all served by the Montana airline. Officials of those airports say the airline had too few planes and was not well organized to deliver good service. At Lake Clear, they were late or canceled flights 80 percent of the time. Big Sky also ran up a gas bill of $51,000. The airport has now cut off gas and other services. "Since then we've worked out a deal with Big Sky if they show good faith and pay a majority of their bill we would release some of that credit again. But as of right now they pay cash or have a valid credit card," said Larry Miller, R-Harrietstown Supervisor.
