A Fondness for Quirky Teenagers

Charlie Bartlett is the movie no studio wanted to make. Impressed by his second unit directing work on Meet the Fockers, executives at Universal encouraged longtime editor Jon Poll – whose editing credits include Meet the Parents and the last two Austin Powers movies – to bring them a movie that he could direct. When he did, it was for a teen comedy in which the titular character sets himself up as the unofficial school therapist, who listens to his fellow students problems and doles out scammed prescription drugs. Universal passed. So did every studio in Hollywood.

"No one would make this film," Poll tells FilmStew during a recent interview in San Francisco. β€œIt's an R-rated movie where kids are giving each other drugs."

To Poll, that was an overly simplistic read of a dark comedy that he nevertheless considers heartwarming and optimistic.

Intractable, implacable, unavoidable change

I had a great visit today with an undergraduate journalism class at Washington State. The "professor" was former SR reporter Ben Shors who took a voluntary buyout last year. Ben is now teaching at WSU as an adjunct faculty member and also is on staff as advisor to The Evergreen, the student newspaper.

Ben's class was as well prepared for our discussion as any class I've visited in recent years. It was an exhilarating visit.

After the class I met with The Evergeen staff and other student journalists for a wide-ranging brown bag session that kept coming back to what these students need to do to prepare for careers in journalism.

Inevitably, I fall back on some of my own "war" stories to illustrate my views. So I talked a bit about the changes I've experienced since becoming a professional journalist in 1973.

Coaching changes, position battles keys to SEC spring practices

The Tigers are deep at running back, and whoever adapts the best to Franklin's spread offense will play the most. Brad Lester and Ben Tate were Auburn's top two rushers in 2007. The most versatile back is Mario Fannin, who caught a team-high five passes in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, including a touchdown.

Florida Gators Spring practice starts: March 19 Spring game: April 12 What to watch: - The Gators need to find a running game outside of Heisman Trophy quarterback Tim Tebow. They hope Emmanuel Moody, a transfer from USC, can fill that void. Moody was the Trojans' second-leading rusher in 2006 before deciding to transfer. He has three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out last season.

- Look for the Gators to spread the ball around even more this season on offense.

Clinton fights to get crucial wins in Texas, Ohio

Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, told Providence radio station WPRO during the day, "We can't go all the way through to the convention fighting with each other while McCain and the Republicans lob in whatever free shots they want." Whitehouse, a superdelegate who supports Clinton, added, "Let's see how Tuesday plays out, and then let's start thinking about how we're going to get behind a candidate."

Slightly more than 600 delegates will remain to be picked in primaries and caucuses in 10 states after this week's primaries, beginning with Wyoming caucuses this weekend and a Mississippi primary on March 11. Pennsylvania is the biggest state remaining, with 158 delegates in a primary on April 22.

The controversy over NAFTA flared after the AP reported the existence of a memo, written by a Canadian official, asserting that Obama's senior economic adviser had told him the Illinois senator's public criticism of the free trade agreement was "political positioning."

The adviser, Austan Goolsbee, said his comments were misinterpreted by the memo's author, Joseph DeMora, who works for the Canadian consulate in Chicago and attended the meeting.

Hospital hurting for funds

People do not make this kind of money and the medical profession needs to realize this I know their work is valuable and their time is precious like most of us but you cannot get blood out of a turnip. I am affraid this whole country is going to have to down size and lower cost of goods and services because the public can no longer afford it. Insurance has cut out so much in claims and what they will not pay for many things, it too is a joke and highly unreliable. It all boils down to economics and unfortunately we are all suffering and until someone gets some common sense to do some good for this country and make some drastic changes this will not get any better. In the mean time there is little we can do.

Sundance documentaries focus on trauma, tragedy

PARK CITY, Utah Β— If the documentaries at this year's Sundance Film Festival reflect the current state of the world, then the world is in trouble.

Irena Salina's "FLOW: For Love of Water" explores a global water shortage that could imperil Third World countries. Patrick Creadon's "I.O.U.S.A." warns that the United States is on the brink of a financial meltdown, while "Trouble the Water," directed by Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, shows how Hurricane Katrina's impact lingers among its survivors as a sobering example of government neglect.

"Secrecy," directed by Peter Galison and Robb Moss, argues that the United States' post-9/11 obsession with classified documents has created a government secrecy crisis. Josh Tickell's "Fields of Fuel" probes the world's uneasy addiction to oil, and Lisa F.

Fog, flooding watches in place

Heavy rainfall is possible Tuesday, and the weather service says that melting snow and nearly frozen soil could result in flooding along some waterways and in low-lying areas.

Current conditions

http://www.journalgazette.net/

If flooding begins in your area

The state recommends:

- Get to higher ground if possible.

- Evacuate your house if flooding is possible.

- Know your town and make sure you know alternate escape routes in case one is blocked.

- Take pets with you if you evacuate. However, many shelters usually do not allow pets inside due to sanitary conditions, so plan accordingly.

- Do not try to drive through water. As little as 2 feet can cause most cars to float, and as little as a few inches of moving water can wash most cars away with the current.

Science DARPA Announces Nanotube Anti-radiation Pill

The process often creates free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and in the case of radiation poisoning, cause disruption in living cells. The disruption often triggers a domino effect, propagating widespread damage throughout the organism's physiology. Unlike Rensselaer Polytechnic's CNT-based cancer, disease and toxin treatment, which creates reactive oxygen to disable target proteins, Tour's group's Nanovector Trojan Horses (NTH) soaks up the harmful free radicals created by radiation poisoning. To make the simple drug, single walled CNTs are coated with two common food preservatives, butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene. Tour explains that the same properties that make the compounds good preservatives, their ability to soak up free radicals, also makes them ideal for the treatment of radiation exposure and sickness.
