| Staging dims power of Britten's British tragedy
How much: $15-$375; call (212) 362-6000 or visit metopera.org. NEW YORK -- Benjamin Britten saw small-town life as ideal in many ways. Yet, as both an avowed pacifist during wartime and a more or less openly gay man in mid-century Britain, the composer saw the danger of not "fitting in." Beyond orchestral and choral music of roiling power, part of what makes Britten's 1945 opera "Peter Grimes" timeless is that the friction between individuality and community, between the potential for good and ill in each, will always be contemporary. Moreover, the blame in this tragedy is ambiguous, shifting according to interpretation. The Metropolitan Opera's new staging of "Peter Grimes," directed by Tony Award-winning Scotsman John Boyle in his Met debut, succeeds in its evocation of stark atmosphere and of those fundamental social tensions.
Clinton, Obama clash over NAFTA, Iraq
The two square off next Tuesday in primaries in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont, with 370 delegates at stake. Both Obama and Clinton were on the receiving end of pointed questions from Tim Russert of NBC News, one of two moderators for the event. Asked whether he was waffling on his pledge of agreeing to take federal funds for the fall campaign, Obama said he was still contesting the primaries. "If I am the nominee I will sit down with John McCain and make sure we come up with a system that is fair to both sides," he said. Obama could presumably raise far more money than the federal system provides, but accepting government money precludes that. .
lets fight to make America the great country it once was
I have been off work for 10 months. prior to that I had never Bloged nor did I know what blogging was. Now i'm addicted to blogging. I go back to work soon and well probably suffer with-drawls. Anyway other blogger have made comments to me that I must be a lonely man or that my life must be really sad to post and argue the stuff I do. Well when I read those statements I always laugh and if my woman is around I'll read her the comment and we both laugh and agree if you only knew how lonely and sad I am you would probably feel sorry for me. God I cant wait to get back to work. It is not good for a man not to work. It makes him kinda whacko, at least it does me. My question is there are several people that post on here all the time.
Toll lanes - a good idea?
A first-year economics student can tell you that any resource that is not priced will be wasted. As McDole told us, if electricity was free, we'd leave the lights on all night. In case you hadn't noticed, we pay for all roads one way or another. The difficulty is that we mostly pay through general taxation. So people who use roads sparingly or not at all must pay the same as those who use them a lot. Once you disassociate cost from use, then people will become wasteful. The reverse happened dramatically in London with the congestion charge. There was opposition at the start, but soon people realised that the cost was well worth paying when they needed to drive, and that they didn't have to pay it when they didn't drive. .

It's been another long week here at GFY HQ, what with the Oscars, and blogging about the Oscars, and then complaining about how boring the Oscars were... but, at long last, TGIF. Which around these parts stands for Thank George It's Friday. What better way to end the week than to borrow again, with respect, a gimmick from The Daily Show and sign off for the day with something that brings us inner peace. After a random conversation with a friend about Reba McEntyre songs, it came to my attention that she'd never been exposed to the sheer brilliance that is the video for that old duet, "Does He Love You?" I remember seeing this when the song came out back in the 90s, and it plucked every soapy heartstring I have. Behold the glories of what Reba is wearing in the very first shot! Of the hat she so boldly wears in extreme close-ups in Act 2! Of the hugeness of her hair in Act Three! The total generic himbo they're fighting for, and all the associated top-notch acting! And that ending.
