'E911' Turns Cell Phones into Tracking Devices

Cell phones will be taking on a new role in 1998, beginning a slow transition to becoming user tracking devices. The outcome of this shift reassures some, but has others calling for restrictions on how cell-locating information can be used.

The impending first phase of the FCC's rules is aimed at enabling emergency services personnel to quickly get information on the location of a cell phone user in the event of a 911 call. By April, all cellular and personal communications services providers will have to transmit to 911 operators and other "public safety answering points" the telephone number and cell site location of any cell phone making a 911 call.

The aim of the law is to bring to cell phone users the same automatic-locating capability that now exists with wireline phones.

House overrides Gov. Pawlenty's veto of transportation bill; Senate ...

It glides as softly as a cloud. Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend? Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend. Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs? Lyle Lanley: You'll be given cushy jobs. Abe: Were you sent here by the devil? Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level. Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can. Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man. I swear it's Springfield's only choice... Throw up your hands and raise your voice! All: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: What's it called? All: Monorail! Lyle Lanley: Once again... All: Monorail! Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken... Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken! All: Monorail! Monorail! Monorail! [big finish] Monorail! Homer: Mono... D'oh! " " .

Bodies ... The Exhibition

So I come home from Disney World to find all this snow and ice here. Something tells me I shoulda stayed an extra day or two.

However, since I'm back in the blogging saddle, and this is DVD release day, and since so many of us are snowed/iced in, it's a good time to see what's new, or new-ish, on DVD shelves.

New Today

Becoming Jane: From the Shakespeare in Love school of literary reimagining comes this drama that tells us the young Jane Austen's life was very much like Pride and Prejudice - too much like it for the movie's own good. The similarity to the classic novel makes the film too pat. Still, it held my attention most of the way, thanks in no small part to a very fine performance by the terminally undervalued Anne Hathaway. GRADE: B

Gone Baby Gone: This powerful tale of a child abduction gone awry, by Mystic River author Dennis Lehane has much the same feel as the Clint Eastwood film of that novel, so it's all the more remarkable that Ben Affleck, directing his first feature, still manages to put his own stamp on the movie, making it feel very authentic and lived-in.

Film fest brings Hollywood flare to Belcher Center

A longtime campus event at LeTourneau University opens to the community Feb. 29 when an amateur Film Festival moves to the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center.

The event pits short movies shot by students, and this year by residents, against each other in an awards show format. Several films will be shown.

"We're doing the whole red carpet thing," student coordinator James Christopherson said. "So, if people want to dress up for it, that would be neat.

"We had several very, very good films this year that, on their own, are worth coming out to see. This has always been just a smaller campus activity. This year we get to open it up (to the community). We're really excited about it."

Christopherson said about 15 amateurs submitted short film entries this year, ranging from five to 15 minutes long.
