How two brutal killers fuelled the DNA debate
Dixie's DNA was similarly entered into the database for a relatively trivial and unconnected offence. He might have got away with stabbing Sally Anne, and then raping and biting her as she lay dying, had he not been involved in a pub brawl during a World Cup football match nine months after attacking her. It was then that his DNA sample was taken as a matter of routine. Within five hours Dixie was in custody for the killing. It is no surprise that Detective Superintendent Stuart Cundy, who led the investigation to find Sally Anne's murderer, is demanding that the DNA of everyone should be sampled and stored centrally. Even so, civil liberties groups were yesterday adamant that only the DNA of sexual or violent offenders should be entered into the database. Britain, they claim, is heading for a universal forensic database introduced by stealth.
Announcing the arrival of the first A380 in S'pore
IN A welcome fit for the 'new queen in the sky', the world's first Airbus 380 superjumbo landed at Changi Airport at about 6.40pm on Wednesday to a water cannon salute. It is a privilege reserved for the very special and the double-decker jet christened 9V-SKA on the Singapore aircraft register is believed to the first to receive such an honour at Changi. Dressed in SIA's livery, the giant bird - as long as a soccer pitch and with a tail seven storeys high - flew in in from the the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse. It was towed into position and docked at the soon-to-be-opened Terminal 3, where Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and about several hundred guests had gathered since 6pm in eager anticipation. The giant bird's flight to Singapore was piloted by a four-member SIA crew led by chief A-380 pilot Captain Robert Ting.
McCain’s life experiences will suit road ahead
John McCain was not my first choice. Or even the second or third. He'd be far more appealing with a Southern conservative as a running mate — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, or Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, to name three. But conservative running mate or not, Mitt Romney's class-act exit leaves McCain without serious challenge for the nomination. And as both Romney and McCain noted in same-day speeches to the Conservative Political Action Conference, this election is not about shades of gray. "Elections in this country are fought within margins of small differences," said McCain. "This one will not be. We are arguing about hugely consequential things." Romney's departing words defined the immediate course for conservatives.
Further Reflections on the MacBook Air
I often have to review products after using them for a much shorter time than I would like and the was definitely true for my column on the MacBook Air. I've now had time to get to know the Air a lot better, including taking it on a transcontinental trip. But if nothing, my original conclusions about it have strengthened with experience: What seemed good feels even better and the defects feel even more deficient. The Good: As long as you are not hobbled by its limitations, the Air is a joy to use. I find that I type more comfortably and accurately on the rather flat keyboard of the air than I do on the more sculptured keyboard of the MacBook Pro. The screen is gorgeous with the LED backlighting providing very even illumination from corner to corner. The ambient light sensing, which I once thought of as a sort of MacBook gimmick is extremely effective at keeping the screen at a comfortable level of brightness under just about any lighting condition except direct outdoor sunshine.
