Business Travelers Can't Seem to Pack Light on Gadgets

Sony's PlayStation Portable video game system has a Web browser and video player.

That's not enough for travelers such as Troy Steward, 39. The computer systems architect from Amherst, N.Y., carries multiple electronics, including two cellphones (a Motorola (MOT) RAZR for work and Treo for personal calls). He uses his PSP only for video games, and an Apple iPod for movies and music. "I (carry) whatever it takes," he says.

Why folks lug around so much stuff:

•Battery life and storage. Putting a movie on the PSP would take up too much space on its storage card, Steward says. That's why he needs the iPod. About 36 percent of smartphone users surveyed said battery life kept them from using the phone too often, Hughes says.

•Interface and synchronization.

Why does the MacBook Air make so many so dumb?

On the other hand, the MacBook Air is light and solid. And beautiful.

Somehow, longtime Mac users were deluded that this new machine would be some kind of a replacement for a MacBook Pro. Sorry, it isn't the replacement for anything. The MacBook Air is something different.

(A brief sidetrack: I add that the whole notion that notebooks can be a "desktop replacement" is marketing nonsense, one that most computer users have bought into. Notebooks are designed for mobility and they make many serious trade-offs when compared with desktop machine, whether professional or consumer grade.

For example, my MacBook Pro is a fantastic machine, however, it can't touch an 8-core Mac Pro's amazing processor performance, networking and storage expansion, video performance and reliability.

ITF and ATP announce ranking points for Olympics

The International Tennis Federation and ATP have announced that ranking points for men will be awarded at the 2008 Olympic Tennis Event in Beijing, as they were at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. The following entry criteria for the 2008 Olympic Tennis Event will now be used in both the mens and womens competitions: The official world rankings will be used as the basis for determining the top 56 direct acceptances in the 64-player singles draw, subject to limitations outlined below as well as existing eligibility requirements. Depending on the singles rankings of their players, nations can be eligible for up to four entries into the singles and up to two doubles teams. A top-10 ranked doubles player is eligible to receive an automatic entry if nominated assuming a qualified partner. By virtue of this agreement, the maximum number of players on-site per gender and per country is raised from four to six.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, left, and Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana ...

I'll calling for a public debate on illegal immigration, and want to invite Ed Sifuentes, Bill Flores from El Grupo, Ruben Navarrette Jr., Ed Morones, and leaders of the local chapters of MEChA and NCLR. I would also like to invite Duncan Hunter, Brian Bilbray, and other media representative as well. In fact I challenge the NCT to put this together for the next Latino Roundtable, so that me and many other concerned Americans can confront this issue. How about it Ed, are you game?

This is a joke right? wrote on Feb 16, 2008 12:06 AM:They say it will only be a 'few bad apples?' This is a joke, right? Of course the aliens are complaining about a six month wait (while they collect welfare albeit), cause they don't want their criminal record to pop up before they get their GET IN FREE CARD! Instead, give them a get outta dodge card, don't pass go, don't collect another $200 in this further downgrading of "America".
