January 2006

If you have this page bookmarked, make sure the last three letters after the final slash are "hbo" instead of the original "nhb" (No Holds Barred). The pageview numbers ran from 4555 to 7514 Monday thru Saturday on the hbo site. We should hit 125,000 for January, which is light years ahead of the 38,133 posted in January 2005. Onward and upward. And here's your first Wild Card of the week ...

On The Constitutional Reasons Behind Copyright And Patents

To kick it off, I wanted to discuss the very rationale for intellectual property rights in the US. While many people assume that there's always been strong support for things like copyright and patents in the US, that's not the case at all. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who were the main players involved, were actually quite skeptical of the concept. Both talked at length about the subject, but a brief quote from each should give you a sense of their feelings. Thomas Jefferson's eloquent statement read thusly: "Stable ownership is the gift of social law, and is given late in the progress of society. It would be curious then, if an idea, the fugitive fermentation of an individual brain, could, of natural right, be claimed in exclusive and stable property. If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it.

Kos Defends Coulter

Can a cheap headline featuring hot-button words "Kos" and "Coulter" goose a blogger's hit count? The stats are in and the answer is ... unfortunately ... yes. ... P.S.: But the hed does refer to an actual item, which is here. 11:55 A.M.

Kos mocks Sen. Lieberman for naming his ad hoc independent party "Connecticut for Lieberman:"

It's still about him. It's always about him.

Hmm. What's the name of Kos's site again? Daily Netroots? Daily People Power? ... [Stolen from reader C.] 5:39 P.M.

The Atlantic's editors have hit on a way to make you hate them: Blogging to let you know what a challenging, "thought-provoking" time they're having at the Aspen Ideas Festival listening to E.O. Wilson, Alan Greenspan, Bill Clinton and Karl Rove, among others:

Election brief: PKR eyes 14 Pahang seats

KUANTAN: Parti Keadilan Rakyat will contest in four parliamentary seats and 10 state constituencies.

Kuantan PKR chief Fuziah Salleh said she was confident about the number of seats to contest.

We have yet to name a few more seats as the party is still looking for suitable candidates.

Fuziah contested in the 1999 and 2004 elections and lost in both.

BN holds all the 14 parliamentary seats and 41 of the 42 state seats in Pahang.
Lim Yong wont contest

KUALA KLAWANG: Negri Sembilan MCA vice-chairman Datuk Lim Yong @ Lim Chen said yesterday it was time to give way to new faces after holding the Chennah state assembly seat in Jelebu for three terms.

The Jelebu MCA division chief has informed party president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting of his intention.

iMovie versus Final Cut Express

When I learned that I'd be part of the Macworld Video production team, I was both excited and more than a bit apprehensive. I was excited because I enjoy working in video, though it never seems I have enough time to do so, and nervous because Apple had recently (with the introduction of iLife '08) basically killed off my video production tool of choice: iMovie HD. iLife '08 includes a program named iMovie '08, but it's related to its predecessor in name only—iMovie '08 is a completely new program.

While iMovie '08 added a number of interesting features beyond those offered in iMovie HD, it also removed quite a few, and more importantly to me, created a completely new paradigm for video editing. In a typical video-editing app, such as iMovie HD, you have a spot to store your video clips, and a timeline on which to place them.
